As a dairy company, it is essential for us to work with our milk suppliers to implement and further develop initiatives related to animal welfare and climate action.
Animal welfare at Hochland
We maintain close cooperation with our milk suppliers and place particular emphasis on treating animals with respect. That is why we work continuously with them to further improve animal welfare – because good housing conditions and the well-being of the animals are fundamental prerequisites for sustainable milk production. In addition, we provide targeted support for country-specific measures to promote animal welfare.
How our milk is produced
Half of the milk we source from Germany already comes from farms certified to animal welfare standards. We adhere to the system for labeling housing types established by the retail sector, which is divided into five levels. Specifically, this means that our milk meets the requirements of either Housing Level 3 (“Open-air barn”) or Housing Level 5 (“Organic”).
Climate-efficient milk production
The majority of our CO2e emissions are generated along the agricultural supply chain – particularly on the farms of our milk suppliers. That is why we are working together with them to produce our milk as climate-efficiently as possible.
It is important to us that our climate goals for milk as a raw material are achieved on a scientific basis. That is why we measure the CO2e footprint directly on the farms. To do this, we use scientifically recognized methods that comply with both the international Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) and the International Dairy Federation (IDF) guidelines for the dairy industry.
